Did you know that scams involving the Geek Squad are happening all over the world? Did you know that in some African countries, this scam has generated a turnover of over $ 22,000, which is a very large amount in local currency? Also, did you know that Geek Squad-related scams are prevalent in the US, UK and Canada from June to July 2021?
Below are some special facts about the Geek Squad scam.
Brief:
Geek Squad is an antivirus and software solutions provider. It also offers repair services for all types of computer equipment. As you may know, in order to access the premium features of antivirus software or AMC, the customer has to pay an annual subscription.
Scammers misuse the Geek Squad brand to target innocent people. People have been receiving emails from ‘Payment_Details’ even though they are using the Geek Squad service. The email reported that the amount ($ 280, $ 399.99 and $ 987) was automatically debited from the customer’s bank account, as the customer chose to renew their subscription automatically.
About Geek Squad Billing Scam:
The email states that their Geek Squad services have been renewed for the next two or three years. The invoice number, product name and subject line were referenced in the email along with the plan number. However, the name of the product does not indicate whether it is an antivirus service or AMC. Most importantly, if the customer wants to dispute the charge, include the phone number in the email.
That was the last trap! The scammers wanted people to call them for a dispute over the claims. Unfortunately, many innocent people fell into the trap and called the number. The originator of the Geek Squad scandal then asked him to remotely check all installed Geek Squad products on his computer. The scammer then acted as if he had made false allegations against the person.
In the next step, the scammer initiates a refund request in front of the customer. But, deliberately acted to process a higher refund! For example, for the $ 399.99 fee reported in the email, the scammer mistakenly issued a refund of $ 4,000.00.
The scammers then asked customers to refund the difference using the BestBuy coupon / gift code, which can be purchased online and communicated over the phone. In the Geek Squad security scam, people were deceived into believing that refund requests could not be changed, and BestBuy coupons are generally accepted for refunds because Geek Squad is owned by BestBuy.
Abstract
People trust and buy BestBuy gift coupons and tell scammers about coupon codes. Gift vouchers are to be given, so no transfer history is kept! Scammers will not be found because gift voucher transactions do not appear on bank accounts, PayPal, e-wallets or plastic cards! So there is no question of reporting fraud to financial institutions!
